It's an unpolished gem, a kernel of potential that doesn't really reveal itself until you look past the MMO-y fetch quests and juvenile sex cards. Gameplay is dated, for sure its combat is strange (though easily broken- like all Witcher games, the key is to max out Aard, and then stun-drop everyone and do lots of finisher moves) the inventory and menu system is very euro-jank CRPG and the difficulty spikes are annoying AF (that trophy monster in Act II swamp- BRING FIRE!).

I also still think the main story is much better in the 1st game (side content varies, and TW3 takes the win due to sheer amount of good side-quests).

TW3 did some callbacks to that as well, but it's much more prevalent in TW1. The original especially feels like a love letter to the books, with a ton of references that only people who read the novels will spot. Maybe you’ll feel differently than I did.ĭunno about the English version, but I adored the Russian voiceovers and writing in all 3 Witcher games. Having said that, The Witcher 1 is free so give it a shot. I just started The Witcher 3 and even putting the visuals aside it is already absolutely lightyears ahead of the first two games in pretty much every regard (hopefully it keeps it up). The mission design too just feels decidedly old in the first two games. To give you some sense of the caliber of writing to expect from the first two games “lesbomancy” is something that’s uttered in The Witcher 2. Even the writing and VO in the second game can be pretty hit or miss in spots. Witcher 1 in particular just feels incredibly dated with the writing and VO being rough (the writing feels especially rough coming off of the novels & comics).

If you’re going to play Witcher 1 then you’re better off doing it for free because as someone who decided, after watching the Netflix season 1, to power through the novels, comics and Witcher 1+2 I feel like I can say those first two games do not hold up well ESPECIALLY without a lot of mods.
